Lorcan - present day

“You’re up early. What are you making?” I ask, leaning against the doorframe as Cyn stirs something in a glass bowl over a saucepan filled with bubbling water.

The heat from the Aga is warming the room and through the window dawn is breaking in deep pinks and opalescent oranges and yellows. For once the sky is free from clouds and the sea is calm.

A good omen perhaps?

Cyn beckons me over. When I reach her side, she points to her leather-bound recipe book, the one she carries with her wherever she goes. Each recipe is illustrated with intricate drawings of the ingredients and equipment she uses on thick cream paper. Accompanying the drawings are detailed instructions written in her neatest cursive. Her artwork is stunning, the attention to detail impressive.

“Skin cream, useful for eczema and on dry, itchy skin,” I read.

She nods, concentrating on the melting honey-coloured liquid. Given the list of ingredients, I surmise that it’s beeswax which, according to her notes, when added with glycerin is a much gentler base for creams used to moisturise the skin.

“You have dry skin?” I ask, watching as Cyn uses a wooden spatula to stir the beeswax until it’s completely melted. She then adds a cup of glycerin and water to the mix.

Shaking her head, she hands me the wooden spoon, urging me to stir so she can pick up her notepad and pencil to communicate.

This is for Arden, she explains.

“Arden? Why would he need cream for eczema?”

Because he has a patch in the crook of his arm.

I stop stirring the liquid, frowning. “He does?”

She nods, pressing her fingers to my wrist gently encouraging me to keep stirring. I glance at where her skin meets mine, enjoying the warmth from her touch. Despite the necklace I wear around my neck, enchanted with some spell that’s supposed to keep my desires under control, I still feel acutely attracted to her. Maybe I don’t have the desperate need to make her mine right at this moment, but I still want her. That hasn’t changed.

Removing her hand, she replies, He isn’t taking care of himself. The stress he’s under is showing in his skin.

“What do you mean by that?” I ask, watching as she drops dried chamomile and witch hazel into the mixture as I stir.

He’s a seer, but he’s denying that part of himself, she writes, frowning. It’s making him sick.

“You know about that?”

She nods. I’ve known for some time.

“And you think that a bit of dry skin has something to do with his gift?”
